This weekend, the 2020 World Series of Poker Main Event kicks off on GGPoker, as the first flight of a live-online hybrid that looks set to crown the Main Event champion for 2020.

This unorthodox Main Event will begin across both WSOP.com and GGPoker, culminating in not only two live final tables, but a final heads-up battle in Las Vegas on December 30th.

Much has been made of this 'second' Main Event of the year, coming only a few months after the successful series of WSOP Online Bracelet Events.

Here PokerNews takes a look at two competing views and asks what it means for poker.

'There Must be a World Champion in 2020'

When the WSOP Main Event was announced, it was WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart who said: 'There must be a World Champion in 2020.'

In the WSOP's eyes, this new $10,000 freezeout will be the 2020 Main Event, irrespective of the online series that preceded it.

This format has decided No Limit Hold'em World Champion since 1972. In 1970, the participants voted on who they thought was the most accomplished player, and in 1971 the buy-in was $5,000.

The $5,000 WSOP Online Main Event was undoubtedly a huge success story, setting a Guinness World Record for largest online poker tournament prize pool, but Stewart maintains that the traditional Main Event format is still important.

'Poker’s history is too important,' he said. '[The hybrid format] is a unique format for the Main Event, but this is a unique year.'

Madanzhiev: 'I am World Champion'

However, the winner of the $5,000 WSOP Online Main Event Stoyan Madanzhiev has expressed confusion at the decision to host another Main Event.

Madanzhiev spoke exclusively with PokerNews and expressed his bemusement at the announcement, reiterating that in his eyes he was the 2020 WSOP Main Event champion.

'I won it,' he said matter-of-factly. 'I received a certificate. It says that I'm the 51st annual World Series of Poker Main Event champion. So this means I'm the Main Event champion. I mean, what else does it mean if it's not that?

'I am the champion of 2020. They said it.'

The certificate he is referring to is one that he has widely paraded on social media. Madanzhiev uses this as his main piece of evidence that he is the Main Event champion of 2020.

Signed by former WSOP APAC Main Event champion and GGPoker Ambassador Daniel Negreanu, the certificate states: 'Congratulations on winning WSOP Event #77: $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em Main Event of the 51st Annual World Series of Poker hosted by GGPoker.'

This is something Madanzhiev calls 'confusing.'

'Everybody started calling me the world champion. It was confusing. [The WSOP] made it look like that with the way they presented the tournament, with the way they gave me the certificate. And I started believing that I am the reigning world champion of 2020. I still think that is correct.'

So What Does This Mean?

Whether or not you think another WSOP Main Event is a good idea is up for debate.

On the one hand, the WSOP Online Main Event will always hold a special place in WSOP history, whereas others will insist that a $10,000 freezeout will always be needed to crown a Main Event champion.

However, two things are certain as we approach the end of this crazy year. Stoyan Madanzhiev will always be remembered as the first WSOP Online Main Event champion, and that the poker community will have some WSOP action to end the year.

Live poker may be a struggle at the moment, but the regulated US online poker market continues to grow. That received a significant boost Wednesday with the announcement of a packed World Series of PokerOnline Circuit schedule.

The first Online Circuit Series kicks off Jan. 14 with a total of 13 events in 2021 on WSOP.com. The online festival will be available for players in Nevada and New Jersey.

Some added good news for US online poker players? WSOP.com’s announcement hinted that a 13th series could be in a new market.

“An additional 13th online circuit event is earmarked pending launch of the WSOP.com service in a newly regulated market,” a news release announcing the circuit launch notes.

That location is likely Pennsylvania or Michigan. PA seems the most obvious as the platform has been approved in the Keystone State.

WSOP.com adds to US online poker offerings

Players can expect an experience as close as possible to traditional live WSOP Circuit events. The schedule includes an online festival each month throughout 2021.

All tournament series will feature at least 12 official WSOP gold ring events. Four special “Super Circuit” series come with an expanded slate of 18 ring events. Super Circuits also include $1,000 and $2,000 high rollers and a $500 Pot Limit Omaha tournament.

Some series will be co-branded with official WSOPC host casinos, highlighting “cash at the cage” buy-in and cash out availability. These events also offer out-of-market players special promotional rates to stay onsite.

“Players deserve great tournaments and great value year-round, and that’s what we aim to do with the 2021 WSOP Online Circuit Series,” WSOP executive director Ty Stewart said in a news release. “We’ve been thrilled with the big prize pools for WSOP.com events in 2020, and we only expect to see that grow with this new model.”

What else can players expect from WSOP.com?

In total, WSOP Online Series events feature over $600,000 in added prize money across a variety of promotions. That includes leaderboard points awarded for every gold ring event.

Players can earn eligibility for freeroll tournaments and other incentives. The entire schedule culminates with the WSOP Online Circuit Championship. This signature tournament comes with some extra incentive – an official WSOP gold bracelet.

The year-end Circuit Championship is capped at 256 players competing for a $250,000 prize pool. Players can qualify by winning a:

• gold ring event during the 2021 season.
• $10,000 Player of the Month leaderboard.
• Second Chance Fast Forward.

Those who finish among the top 50 players on the cumulative circuit leaderboard also earn an entry. Here’s a look at the complete schedule:

Players getting in the WSOP Online Circuit action have plenty of extras to look forward to. Each series features a $25,000 freeroll for top performers. This tournament comes with exclusive eligibility only to those who:

• Win a gold ring event during that series.
• Finish among the top 10 on the leaderboard in the tournament festival.

Additionally, players receive a Second Chance Freeroll for participating in at least four tournaments in each series. The winner-take-all event rewards a seat into the year-end WSOP Online Circuit Series Championship.

$10,000 added for Circuit Player of the Month

WSOP.com has added even more for 2021. The WSOP Circuit Series leaderboard will reward the top 10 players with a share of $10,000 in tournament tickets. Players earn points by participating in WSOP gold ring events each month.

These players also receive entry into a $25,000 monthly freeroll. The leaderboard’s first-place finisher also wins a seat into the $250,000 WSOP Online Circuit Championship.
